User Interface Designers guide the research, selection, design and implementation of user interfaces.
The digital team is seeking a UX/UI designer to support the design and improvement of the agency’s digital services, including the website and digital products such as dashboards and the Jobs and Skills Atlas platform. The designer will conduct user research, create design solutions that meet user needs, and work closely with developers to ensure designs are implemented effectively. This role will involve both strategic design thinking and hands-on interface design work, with a focus on creating accessible, user-centred digital experiences that align with government standards. This is a collaborative role working within a small team of developers, designers and data specialists.
Key duties and responsibilities
The key deliverables of the roles include:
- Conduct user research to understand user needs, behaviours and pain points for the agency’s digital services
- Design user interfaces and interactions for websites, dashboards and digital products
- Create wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity designs that translate user needs into functional solutions
- Support the implementation of designs by working closely with developers throughout the development process
- Contribute to improving the overall user experience of the agency’s digital service
Key Responsibilities
- Apply user-centred design principles and methodologies to all design work
- Ensure designs meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and are inclusive of all users
- Collaborate with developers, service designers and data specialists to deliver cohesive digital experiences
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to establishing design standards and patterns
- Support the team in meeting Digital Service Standard requirements through good design practice
Criteria
Essential criteria
- Demonstrated experience in UX and UI design for digital products, including websites, dashboards or web applications
- Strong skills in user research methodologies and translating research insights into design solutions
- Proficiency in Figma for creating wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity designs
- Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and inclusive design principles
- Ability to work collaboratively with developers and other team members, with strong communication skills and attention to detail
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in government or public sector environments
- Familiarity with the Digital Service Standard and user-centred design practices in government contexts
